3 Ways Cold Weather Can Impact Exterior Work

Changes to the seasons can mean changes to your construction projects. Here are a few things to consider when choosing exterior projects in the winter months, along with suggestions on projects that are perfect to consider completing in those colder temperatures.

Weaker Concrete

Pouring concrete in low exterior temperatures can slow the drying process, which can impact how strong it will be once it actually dries. In fact, according to the American Concrete Institute, pouring fresh concrete in temperatures of 40 degrees or lower may reduce concrete strength by half!

Effect of Adhesives

Cooler temperatures can alter the chemical makeup of adhesives, mortar, and grout which weakens their bonding capabilities and ultimately means they will not work properly or may need to be redone.

Exterior Paint Longevity

Though exterior painting can happen during the winter months, waiting until temperatures are warmer is ideal. Painting in less-than-ideal conditions or temperatures can lead to problems like cracking, bubbling, or inconsistencies in color over time.

While some external construction work may not be ideal to complete during the winter months, it does not need to end altogether!

Working with a professional, like Alpine, who can evaluate and provide recommendations on the projects that will be successful in the winter months will save time, and money and help you prepare for new projects once the weather warms up.

Here are 3 projects our team recommends focusing on in the winter months so you can move your attention fully to the outside once the spring weather hits:

Interior painting

Our expert team is ready to help with your next project whether you need your walls painted or your interior space completely renovated. Plus, there may actually be added benefits to painting your interior in the winter months. This is due primarily to the reduction of moisture in the air (in most locations), as well as the lower temperatures which can help paint dry faster.

Sandblasting

One of the reasons we opened our fully enclosed blasting and painting facility was so painted and sandblasting projects could continue regardless of the outside temperature. Our team of well-trained, expert craftsmen offers state-of-the-art prepping and painting equipment for all types of projects, both commercial and industrial.

Interior Flooring

Flooring is a great project for the winter months! Our specialty flooring division has a variety of options to meet your needs and a skilled team ready to help with application - from non-skid products for high-traffic areas to durable coatings to protect against impact, chemical spills, or temperature changes.
