What carries forward
Every year your bridge management program produces a record. Section condition gets noted, coating condition gets noted, and then someone decides what gets funded this year and what carries forward.
What carries forward is usually off the main. Main line gets the capital because that's what carries the revenue. So scope accumulates on yard steel, industrial leads, engine house and shop structures, retaining walls, fuel and wash facilities, and bridges on branch trackage — assets that stay in service for decades and see a contractor rarely. Those are exactly the structures where surface preparation and a properly specified coating system buy the most service life per dollar spent.
Most of them are waiting on the same thing: a contractor who can work on railroad property, handle steel with coatings of unknown age, and document every step in a form that holds up. That's the work we do, and we're an hour or less from most short line property in this state.
Scope of work
Surface preparation. Abrasive blasting to specified profile, field and shop, including constrained yard conditions and work around live track. Power tool cleaning and spot preparation where a full blast isn't the right call. Surface condition documented before coating goes on.
Containment and environmental controls. Full containment for blast operations, including on structures with coatings of unknown composition. Air monitoring, waste characterization, and disposal handled as part of scope.
Protective coating systems. Shop and field application. Zinc-rich primers, epoxies, urethanes, and high-build systems specified to the exposure and the substrate, not to whatever's on the shelf.
Steel fabrication and welding. Section repair, plate work, and fabrication performed alongside coating scope, so one contractor carries the whole sequence instead of coordinating a handoff mid-project.
Anti-graffiti systems. Sacrificial and permanent systems on bridge piers, abutments, sound walls, and structures in exposed locations.
