Why your welding contractor and your painting contractor should be the same company

In most industrial facility maintenance programs, welding and protective coating are treated as separate trades — a welding contractor is hired to perform structural repairs or fabricate new components, and then, after the welding work is complete, a separate painting contractor is brought in to apply corrosion protection. This conventional approach is so widely practiced that most facility managers accept it as the only way to manage these scopes. It is not. And the quality gap it creates is one of the most preventable and costly sources of premature coating failure in industrial maintenance painting.
The flash rusting problem
When bare steel is exposed through blasting or welding and then left uncoated — even for hours, let alone days — flash rusting begins. In humid industrial environments, particularly those near water, chemical processes, or coastal zones, flash rusting can develop visible rust within 30 to 60 minutes on a freshly blasted surface. Flash rust is not merely cosmetic. If a coating is applied over a flash-rusted surface, the rust is incorporated beneath the coating film, providing a pathway for moisture to migrate laterally under the coating and driving progressive delamination.
When separate welding and coating contractors operate on different schedules — which is virtually always the case — the time between weld completion and coating application is measured in days or weeks, not hours. During that interval, the freshly exposed steel at every weld joint, heat-affected zone, and ground surface is rusting. The subsequent coating application goes over contaminated steel, and the coating system that is supposed to last fifteen years fails in five.
The weld zone coating challenge
New weld metal and heat-affected zones present specific coating challenges that a contractor unfamiliar with welding cannot fully address. Weld spatter — the small drops of molten metal expelled during welding — creates sharp surface irregularities that coating films bridge rather than cover, producing thin spots and holidays that become corrosion initiation sites. Weld slag must be completely removed. Sharp weld edges require additional stripe coats of primer before the full coating system is applied.
When the contractor performing the coating is the same contractor who performed the welding — and who understands what a weld zone looks like and what it requires — these steps happen as part of a seamless workflow. When a separate coating contractor arrives after the fact, the quality of the weld preparation depends entirely on their initiative to identify and address issues that a welding-ignorant inspector might miss.
