What is Powder Coating & Why is it Beneficial?

It’s among the most popular and durable surface finishes on the market today (and has been since its introduction in the 1960s). So, what exactly is powder coating, and what’s the benefit of using it over more traditional methods of painting? Read on for more from our expert painting team.

What is powder coating?

Powder coating is a dry finishing process that combines curatives, pigments, leveling agents, and other additives into a powder-like form that is either fluidized or electro-statically charged. This material is then cured to melt the powder creating a single continuous film over the surface to which it is being applied to.

How does it work?

Powder coatings are usually applied using a spray gun, which creates a charge on the powder that is attracted to the surface being sprayed. Once the powder has been sprayed, the surface is heated which helps create a durable, breakdown-resistant coating.

What are the benefits of powder coating?

Powder coating has a number of advantages over other types of paints for a variety of reasons. Here are a few of our favorites:

1. High-quality and durable

Powder coatings offer an extremely hard, abrasion, and chemical-resistant finish. Plus, they are generally much thicker than traditional paint without the added risk of running or sagging.

2. Maximized protection

A properly prepared and maintained powder coating will last indefinitely and will not crack, chip, or peel in conditions where other paint methods might.

3. Environmentally friendly

This type of coating emits zero or near zero volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which means it emits much less waste when compared to traditional painting techniques.

4. Functional

Powder finishes are available in a wide variety of colors and textures, allowing businesses to match their finishes to their branding or their existing paint scheme.

Where is powder coating best used?

Powder coating is great for a variety of applications from metals, heavy equipment, machinery, and parts. It’s particularly useful for items that are subject to extreme weather, constant moisture, UV rays, and a variety of chemicals.

Where can powder coating be done?
