How Coating Systems Can Protect Against Fire

Did you know the paint you use may be able to help support your building in the event of a fire? It’s true! Today’s paint market has many options when it comes to fire protection, including fire-resistant and fire-retardant paints. Read on for more about each.

Intumescent Paint (Fire Resistant or Fire Proof)

Intumescent paint is a paint we use frequently with both commercial and industrial clients. This thin paint coating expands - sometimes up to 25 times the original thickness - when exposed to high temperatures, essentially creating an insulating barrier that hardens into a material called “char.” This allows the structures the paint is applied to extra time before flames are able to reach the surface.

This type of paint coating is easy to apply, incredibly durable, and can be used both indoors and outdoor on a variety of building materials, including structural steel and wood. They not only provide fire protection but enable these areas to meet standard fire codes, fire rating and flame spread requirements.

Flame Retardant Paint

Another option in fire protection is flame retardant paint, which can be used on non-critical infrastructure and help prevent flame spread if a building catches on fire. This coating application essentially “treats” the areas it is applied to with a layer of fire protection that helps limit the spread of flames and avoids the melting of the material.
