Project overview
The award-winning project involved the comprehensive protective coating of a major industrial facility in Alpine's core New Jersey service territory. The scope encompassed surface preparation, primer application, intermediate coat, and topcoat systems on structural steel, equipment, and process infrastructure across a significant area of the facility — all performed within the operational constraints of an active industrial site where production continuity was a non-negotiable requirement.
The technical challenge
What distinguished this project from a standard industrial coating scope was the combination of challenges that had to be managed simultaneously — the demanding service environment of the facility, the strict access and operational constraints of an active plant, the requirement for detailed documentation to support the facility's quality management program, and the compressed schedule that the client's operational cycle imposed. Surface preparation
Surface preparation on this project was performed to SSPC SP-10 near-white blast cleaning standard, verified by our AMPP Senior Certified Coating Inspectors before any coating material was applied. Surface profile was measured and documented using calibrated replica tape gauges, and any area that did not meet specification was re-blasted before coating proceeded. This verification discipline — checking and documenting before moving forward — is the operational practice that produces coating systems that last.
Coating system
The specified coating system — a zinc-rich primer, high-build epoxy intermediate coat, and aliphatic urethane topcoat — was applied in accordance with manufacturer requirements for ambient conditions, mixing ratios, recoat windows, and dry film thickness. Daily inspection reports documented application conditions, product lot numbers, wet film thickness checks, and final dry film thickness readings at the specified measurement frequency and locations. This documentation became part of the project close-out package delivered to the client.
