Last year, pranksters led by Dutch performance artist Iepe B.T. Rubingh rode their bicycles into a crowded intersection in Berlin and unloaded over 132 gallons of brightly-colored paint onto the street, effectively turning passing cars, buses and bikes into unwitting paintbrushes. Entitled “Painting Reality,” the video below showcases the beginning of this self-proclaimed case of guerilla street art as well as the final result created by the color-injected traffic.

Alpine Painting & Sandblasting Contractors was contracted to clean the exterior of "Echo". This piece of art was created by Spain's Famous Artist Jaume Plensa and installed at New York City's Madison Square Park in Manhattan, NY. This was a sensitive project because of the height of the structure and it's delicate fiberglass exterior. Our industrial blasters utilized slurry blasting techniques to carefully clean her face without damaging the artwork. Through the Slurry Blasting process we mixed crushed glass and water to remove the existing staining and provide a clean final look for our customer. The piece will only be up until Aug. 14th, 2011 so check it out now before it's gone.

Alpine Painting is honored to be recognized in the national publication, DECO, The Official Magazine of the PDCA. Besides winning our 4th consecutive National Safety Award, Alpine Painting was also recognized with two 2011 Picture it Painted Professionally (PIPP) Awards.

The First PIPP award recognized Alpine’s craftsmanship for our commercial exterior work for AMB Property Corporation. This job required the painting of 14 warehouses using a wide range of surface materials including brick, stucco, and cinder block. In total Alpine covered over 175,000 square feet in surface.

The Second PIPP award recognized Alpine’s excellence in the industrial category for our work on the American Water Short Hills Tank project. This mammoth 800,000 gallon water tank stands 35 feet high and has a diameter of over 63 feet. Alpine had to use five truck loads of crushed stone to stabilize a temporary foundation to erect elaborate scaffolding. After successfully draining and coating the tank the people of Short Hills were left with a vastly improved resource for their local community. Alpine’s diligent craftsmen and their relentless pursuit for perfection enabled us to win this prestigious honor.

We are truly humbled by this national recognition from DECO magazine.

Specifically the regulations apply to houses, apartments, and child-occupied facilities such as schools and daycare centers built prior to 1978.

All painting firms must certified and each individual employee must be trained for lead-safe work practices. Contractors must also provide the building owners with a new hazard pamphlet and post lead hazard signs around the property. Finally, the EPA has mandated that contractors practice dust containment measures and follow waste disposal procedures.

	EPA Exceptions

There are also certain exceptions to the new safety regulations. For example, if work includes only the application of paint and does not involve sanding, scraping, or other dust causing activities then the new RRP regulations do not apply. Additionally small projects such as interior work that is less than six square feet of painted surfaces or less than 20 square feet of painted surfaces for exterior work do not apply. Furthermore, you can receive an exemption from the rules if the area has been declared free of all lead-based paint by a certified renovator that uses the EPA recognized test kit.

	Why Alpine?

Alpine is certified by the EPA and are well-versed in all of the new lead safety regulations. Our craftsmen have been given extensive training about the new safety protocols and have had years of experience in the field to perfect their craft while following every safety measure right down to the letter.

Be sure to ask the next contractor you hire if they are certified through the EPA for the new RRP lead law. More information can be found by visiting the EPA’s website at www.epa.gov or by contacting Alpine Painting at www.AlpinePainting.com or (973) 279-3200.

Green Building Programs Forecast to Skyrocket

Space covered by green building certification programs will increase from 6 billion square feet worldwide in 2010 to 53 billion square feet by 2020, a new market forecast says.

About 80% of green-certified building space will be in the commercial building sector by 2020, up from 73% today, reports Pike Research, of Boulder, Colo.

For commercial space, most green certifications will go to existing buildings, rather than new construction. In contrast, most of the residential focus will be on green certification of new properties, the company forecasts.

“Green building techniques are increasingly becoming the standard within the architecture and construction industries,” says research analyst Eric Bloom. “There are three major drivers behind green building certifications: environmental responsibility, reducing operating expenses through energy efficiency, and regulatory requirements that mandate energy efficiency and certifications.”

Green building certification programs are becoming increasingly important tools to verify that a building meets a set of “green” criteria, including energy efficiency, sustainable materials selection, site location and indoor environmental quality. In addition to their environmental benefits, certified green buildings can sometimes command higher property values and rents, and green building certification can distinguish certain properties in highly competitive real estate markets, Pike notes.

In addition to the well-known Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program in the United States and the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) program in the United Kingdom, there are more than 20 established green building councils around the world, with more than 40 other national-scale groups seeking similar status in the next few years.

While LEED and BREEAM will continue to dominate the North American and European green building markets, respectively, Pike Research anticipates that newly developed programs in China and India will represent about 30% of all certified green new construction by 2020.

Pike Research’s study, “Green Building Certification Programs,” analyzes the current market and regulatory conditions related to green building certification programs and provides forecasts for the growth of this industry.

The report includes an examination of green building drivers, barriers, and likely shifts in the underlying construction market. It also features profiles of major industry players, including detailed descriptions of dozens of green building certification programs around the world. An Executive Summary of the report is available for free download at http://www.pikeresearch.com/.

Family Business, Thrive Not Just Survive

Painting is in Dave Scaturro’s blood. As sales and marketing director of New Jersey-based Alpine Painting and Sandblasting Contractors, he helps carry a tradition started by his elders in 1975. “One thing we try to do is harness the knowledge and experience my dad and uncle have developed and put it into a system and a process,” he says. “We didn’t want that to be lost. In the short-term, the first generation will be able to retire, but all their experience and knowledge won’t be lost.” Two of Scaturro’s brothers, along with a cousin and uncle, are also torch-bearers of the family business. Despite a housing downturn that continues to leave many able contractors grasping for work, Alpine has held steady. Scaturro attributes this success to the company’s time-hardened competitive edge. “We enjoy a relaxed environment that’s fun loving, but we keep it fine-tuned to the numbers.” DECO spoke to the second-generation craftsman, who also serves as president of the North Jersey PDCA, about the nuts and bolts of competition.

DECO: What accounts for Alpine’s success during the devastating downturn?

Dave Scaturro: I would say what makes us a little different is the fact that we’re not set up like your average painting company. We’re more of a corporation. We have systems and processes. We live and die by our organization chart, weekly meetings, reports, forms, etc. We’re very financially oriented. Our sales team has specific numbers to reach. Overall, we have very clear goals and everyone knows the path they need to take.

DECO: How is the company structured?

Scaturro: We have about 25 people in the office, and 100 painters, some of whom are subcontractors, in the field. In office, we have teams in project management, sales, customer service, and accounting.

Our subcontracting process is rigorous. We have training and orientation, and check certificates and references, just like if we we were hiring a full-time employee. If we have a job in the public sector, we make sure they’re certified to work in the public sector.

We do a very good job as far as communicating expectations. There are always little issues, more with subcontractors than full-time employees. There are more layers to look at, things that may get lost in translation. Overall, I think we have a good chain of command. On every one our jobs, we have project managers. We have forms and everyone gets a copy of all the paperwork, so there’s no confusion on expectations, personnel, and safety. It’s about communication.

DECO: When did you and your brothers enter the family business?

Scaturro: I’ve been doing this almost my whole life, starting at 14 years old, painting for my father during the summers. I learned how to run crews, as well as the craft and art of painting. Even how to sell and make cold calls. My brothers and I were fortunate enough to all go to college, and are able to bring that knowledge. One of my brothers handles operations, another handles industrial sales and project management. I handle commercial resources. Each of us knows we’re responsible for our own departments.

DECO: Despite your steady growth, Alpine couldn’t have been completely insulated from the fallout – the credit crunch, halted construction, etc.

Scaturro: True, it’s not all butterflies and cupcakes. It’s definitely been harder these past couple years. So, we cut expenses, cut back in many areas to a degree. But in marketing, we’ve invested more money to build a stronger presence. That, in turn, has led to deeper returns. Most of our customers recognize and demand the exact same thing; they want us to sharpen our pencil, to be more competitive. At this point, we’re not going to take a job unless it makes us money. I don’t go for the carrot trick.

DECO: If not carrots, what can you hold out to keep business thriving?

Scaturro: Service, service, service. Without question, before during and after a project, we really try to serve our customers as best as we can. I’m not the cheapest contractor out there, but we’re going to give the best service. That’s really what we work hard at – not just delivering a good paint job, but also building good relationships. In practice, we try to hit this on many levels, from something as personal as taking a client out to lunch.

Another vital characteristic is our diversity. When the housing market crashed, when things weren’t being built, when general contracting was sluggish, people going after one market suffered. We try to be extremely diverse. As a commercial painter, I don’t just go after office buildings; I go after warehouses, retail stores, manufacturing plants, hospitals, schools. We target lots of different sectors through email marketing and cold calling. We have salespeople dedicated to individual markets, which gives us an advantage. When new construction is slow, something else is picking up

Playing an integral part in the family business can be challenging. Carving out one’s place in the family business is not always an easy task. The goal of yesterday’s Emerging leaders program was to provide a forum where attendees could hear from the experts. Developing leadership and management skills to grow the business were at the top of the agenda, with attendees eager to both learn from and share with each other.

Dave Scaturro of Alpine Painting & Sandblasting Contractors, Emerging Leaders Committee Chairman, welcomed attendees, remarking on the geographical diversity and talent in the audience. “We encourage you to keep an open mind as you listen to the speakers,” he said. “We also hope you will share your knowledge and fresh ideas.”

As attendees introduced themselves, it was apparent that their backgrounds were quite different. Some had started as soon as they could hold a paint brush, working their way up the company ladder, and were already in management roles. Others had returned to begin learning the business after college or pursuing other career paths. Regardless of whether they were in the commercial, industrial or residential sector, holding positions in operations, estimating, project management or sales, attendees were eager to learn.

Also in the audience were industry veterans eager to hear what the next generation had to say and new ideas they would be discussing. They also encouraged attendees to get involved in either PDCA or SSPC, learn about new products and pursue accreditation programs.

The program offered not only speaker presentations but roundtable discussion led by other young leaders eager to share their knowledge on topics such as employee management, project management and risk management. The day wrapped up with Beer and Bull, an opportunity to share ideas in a more relaxed atmosphere and meeting past Emerging Leaders attendees.

An annual highlight of the PACE program, Emerging Leaders will also appear on the SSPC agenda at Green COAT 2010, SSPC’s new industry event. Sam Scaturro, also with Alpine Painting, said the program will continue in Las Vegas for the Industrial contractor segment.

		Alpine Honored With Two Awards

In the May 2010 edition of Journal of Protective Coating & Lining Alpine Magazine (JPCL) Alpine was honored with the George Campbell Award and the William Johnson Award. In conjunction with the SSPC, the magazine recognized two of Alpine’s exceptional painting projects out of the eight featured pieces.

		William Johnson Award

Alpine Painting was given the William Johnson award for their contributions to the Lucy the Elephant Project. The Save Lucy Committee credits Alpine for their work in preserving Lucy the Elephant which has been a National Historical Landmark since1975. The project required dirt, dust, and rust removal along with a wood rejuvenation process and epoxy coatings. In order to avoid overspray, all paint was applied by brush and roller and all gray surfaces received tow full finish coats of 100% acrylic, rust preventative, satin finish, elastomeric coating.

		George Campbell Award

Alpine’s success on the Rockland County Pipelines project was recognized with the George Campbell Award. The project included abrasive blasting, insulation, and paint coatings at two separate locations that were each over 20 years old. The painting crew had to install water booms to protect the brook and extensive scaffolding work was needed. Additionally, Alpine treated the area for asbestos. Although the crew was faced with abnormal inclement weather, the project was completed 100 fewer than the required contract.

For more than 35 years, the Scaturro family has taken great pride in building Alpine Painting and Sandblasting Contractors into the efficient, full-service commercial/industrial painting company it is today.

“When we say ‘more than brushes and ladders’ states Dave Scaturro, the company’s sales director, “it describes a systematic operational discipline that is attached to everything we do to complete our work accurately, on time and within budget.”

Headquartered in Paterson, the company employs more than 100 painters, and a full support staff, including administration, operations, estimating, engineering, sales and customer service. By consistently demonstrating skill and reliability, Alpine has developed strong, lasting relationships with commercial businesses, operators of industrial complexes, as well as state, county and municipal governments throughout New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania.

“We are very good at what we do because we like what we do,” says Scaturro. “No other painting contractor we know of can boast more emphatically about their repeat customer rate than we can.”

Broad in both scope and ability, Alpine Painting can tailor its jobsite protocols to any project’s specifications. The company’s operational systems assure customers get the right manpower on the job when needed: day, night, weekends, holidays, or whenever an emergency arises.

Alpine’s commercial painting services cover a broad range of environments and applications. including interior and exterior work in office buildings, retail stores, apartment/condominium complexes. Industrial site painting services range from bridges to warehouses and may include aggressive surface preparation techniques and specialized coatings.

Obtaining qualified industrial painting services is often difficult for a site manager since a site may present complex challenges, says Scaturro. But with a long list of qualifications including OSHA safety standards, employee training, and environmental safeguards, Alpine Painting can handle the most challenging job.

“We’ve seen almost everything,,” says Scaturro. “Very little would surprise us.”

To complement its broad range of commercial and industrial painting services, Alpine Painting also has a full-service, in-house paint shop staffed by experienced sandblasters and paint finishers. From massive snow plows and truck-mounted salt spreaders to fabrication machines and factory conveyers, Alpine knows how to make equipment look good.

When it comes to safety and liability protection, Alpine emphasizes an exemplary performance record. Workers follow specific protocols that safely see every job to completion. When strict safety guidelines and exact jobsite procedures are a must, no company has higher standards, says Scaturro. In fact, this year the company received The Painting and Decorating Contractors of America Gold Award for Safety.

The second generation has populated the management ranks at Alpine, growing into their areas of responsibility after years of hands-on practical experience. As a result, Mr. Scaturro explains, “our firm is on a growth trajectory that assures our customers and employees will always come first.”

“We are business people with years of experience in not only meeting customers’ needs but exceeding their expectations,” says Scaturro.

Restoring Lucy, The Worlds Largest Elephant

Lucy the Elephant is the world’s largest elephant, measuring 65 tall. This massive structure consists of over one million pieces of timber, 8,560 ribs or arches, 200 kegs of nails, four tons of bolts and 12,000 square feet of tin to cover her exterior.

The structure was built in 1881 by James V. Lafferty, Jr. Lafferty built the giant pachyderm to lure investors to then, “South Atlantic City”, in an effort to buy his properties in the surrounding area. In the late 1890’s Lucy was sold to the Gertzen family. The Gertzens charged visitors 10 cents to tour the furnished interior of the Elephant building and climb the spiral stairway to the howdah or observation on its back. In 1902 an English family leased the Elephant as a summer home. They moved into Lucy’s interior and converted the main hall into four bedrooms, a dining room, kitchen and parlor. A bathroom was outfitted in one of the small front shoulder closets using a miniature bathtub, you can still see on display today.

In the 20th century Lucy had been converted into a tavern, nearly burned to the ground and heavily damaged in multiple hurricanes. In 1970 the Gertzen family donated Lucy to the City of Margate and sold the land to developers. Shortly after the property, on which Lucy stood, was sold the new owner threatened to demolish the decaying old elephant landmark. A group of Margate Citizens formed the Save Lucy Committee in an effort to raise enough funds to relocate and rebuild this giant structure.

In 1971 Lucy was recognized as a National Historic Landmark. A total of $124,000 were raised, from both public and private contributions, for here reconstruction. Since the summer of 1974 until today Lucy has been open to the public. Today, approximately 32,625 people take the tour of Lucy “The World’s Largest Elephant” each year.

Alpine Painting was hired by Rich Helfant, Executive Director of the Save Lucy Committee. Rich contracted Alpine Paintings’ Services for the painting of the Elephant’s Exterior Metal Structure. Lucy’s exterior had not been coated in 7 years and the exterior coating was peeling and showing corrosion on over 50% of the elephant’s seams.

Lucy the Elephant sits approximately 100 yards away from the ocean. This structure constantly gets blasted by rising sand and salt water. Alpine utilized a flash rust inhibiter/salt removing product called Hold Tight during the pressure washing phase to ensure that all of the salts and other surface contaminants were removed prior to the coating application.

A 60 ft. articulating boom lift was donated by Hertz Rental Company to safely access all of the surfaces to be painted. All peeling paint and rusted surfaces were hand tool cleaned to ensure that no damage was caused to Lucy’s delicate tin exterior. Once all of the rust and loose and peeling paint was removed our crew spot primed the tin seams with MAB’s Ply-Mastic 44 Series, Rust Inhibitive, Epoxy Mastic Primer. This high performance epoxy mastic is designed to exclude corrosion producing moisture by forming a hard, barrier-like film over tightly adhered rusted surfaces.

Because we were painting a metal structure, that expanded and contracted with the changing of the weather, we utilized an Elastomeric Coating that provided more elasticity and elongation to assist with bridging minor hairline cracks. MAB’s Acralastic Elastomeric Coating was applied because of its excellent color retention and adhesion qualities. Initially, another elastomeric coating was specified, but after applying a sample and performing an adhesion test it was rejected based on poor adhesion. The paint utilized on this project was donated by the Sherwin Williams Company.

Due to the fact that this project consisted of the rehabilitation of a National Historic Landmark, Alpine worked closely with Margaret Westfield, of Westfield Architects & Preservation Consultants to ensure we utilized accurate Munsell colors that closely represented colors from when Lucy was initially painted.

Since this project was so detail oriented we utilized a small crew of 2-5 men to work through the entire month of June, 2009. June proved to be a very wet month in Southern New Jersey which held the project up considerably. Our men hand cut in yellow and red accent colors for the Elephants blanket. {Picture #11 Hand Painting Blanket} All paint was applied by brush and roll to avoid overspray on the nearby cars, buildings and customers visiting Lucy.

All of Lucy’s 22 windows were inspected for rotten wood and missing glazing. All of the rotten wood was removed to a sound substrate. Because this is a National Historic Landmark we did not replace the wood window frames. Rather we applied Conserv Flexible Epoxy Consolidant 100 epoxy wood filler. Missing glazing around window panes was reapplied to prevent water from entering.

Throughout the entire project Lucy was open to the public. We safely coned and taped off areas where we were working to ensure that no customers entered into our work area. Our foreman, supervisor and project manager were at the site on a regular basis to ensure the project was completed safely and according to the contract documents.

Overall, the project was a huge success. We were able to complete this project and allow the customer to stay in business during their busiest time of the year. The Save Lucy Committee was so pleased they asked our company to bid the entire interior painting project inside of Lucy the Elephant. Alpine Painting was also awarded a letter of recommendation and the ability to hang our company banner on top of Lucy for the entire summer season.

Tumbling Waters, Painting of a Power Plant Penstock

Power generation was one of the most important topics in our recent presidential election. Our country is moving toward clean energy at an ever increasing rate. Wind and solar energy are two of the most talked about methods for the future. Another form of clean energy production that has been around for years, but is not as commonly discussed is pumped storage. This method of energy production creates power by moving water through generation turbines from an upper to a lower reservoir. Unlike a dam which is only able to provide power when the weather is cooperative enough to keep the reservoir full, pumped storage is always available. As you may imagine, it takes more energy to pump the water back to the upper reservoir each day, in fact it’s only about 75% efficient. The real benefit of this energy is that it is available to create power for high demand periods throughout the day and use power during low demand periods overnight.

One particular Pumped Storage Facility in New Jersey creates power by transferring water from an upper reservoir to a lower reservoir via a ½ mile (approx. 2,000 foot) long pipe called a Penstock. More than 1 billion gallons of water rushes down through this 20 foot diameter above ground pipe each day, generating up to 400 megawatts of power. Each night the turbines reverse and the water is pumped back up to the upper reservoir for the following day.

This plant has been in operation since 1965. The original coating was removed from the exterior of the Penstock in 1985 and an Inorganic Zinc/Chlorinated Rubber system was installed. The coating system has performed well over the last 23 years, but it was beginning to show signs of corrosion and was due for maintenance. Several coatings were tested from various manufacturers, but the epoxy/acrylic polyurethane system from Keeler & Long proved superior. Next, the process of selecting a contractor was very closely examined. The owner secured proposals from a list of some of the most experienced & well respected contractors in the region resulting in the selection of Alpine Painting & Sandblasting Contractors.

A Bonus/Penalty clause was also included in the contract. Ten percent of the contracted price was either added or removed based on performance in these four areas: Safety, Quality Control, Schedule and Environmental Impact.

Both the Owner and Alpine share the philosophy that safety is paramount on every project. All workers attended site specific training provided by the Owner as well as a review of Hazards associated with this project and weekly toolbox meetings conducted by Alpine’s site foreman. This project had many areas of considerable safety concern. Brush Fires, Fall Protection and Ladder Safety were among the highest. Fire was a serious concern since tall grass surrounded the Penstock and the plant is nearby one of NJ’s largest State Parks. Tall grass was cleared from both sides of the structure as well as from any staging areas for equipment to limit the possibility of a fast spreading fire. Alpine used a 20 foot long steel storage container to store all flammables on site and we deemed it mandatory that a 20 lb. fire extinguisher was no more than 10 feet from any gasoline or diesel engine on site.

To combat the problem of protecting workers from falls atop the Penstock, Alpine designed a unique wire rope positioning system. This design required workers to be tied off, with nylon lanyards attached to a full body harness, to both sides of the Penstock by horizontal wire ropes. This system kept workers atop 25% of the circumference of the Penstock without allowing them to be exposed to a potential fall. The highest section of the Penstock added an additional element of concern due to its significant pitch. On this area, workers used wire rope grabs while ascending the pipe, but not allowing a fall in the downhill direction.

Ladder safety was a serious concern as well, due to the uneven ground and significant pitch of the Penstock. Only type I and type IA ladders from Werner were used on this project to help ensure stability and the comfort of our workers. It was required by Alpine that all ladders be tied off to the horizontal cables in case a ladder slipped on uneven ground. Finally, all ladders were retrofitted by Alpine with Werner automatic leveling legs and spreader bars to improve the speed at which work was performed while ensuring a stable and safe work platform.

Quality Control was a daily routine for our onsite foreman. He was charged with all aspects of quality from recording batch information, conditions & inspection of paint mixing, to walking the Penstock during the pre-inspection of spot tooled areas (SSPC-SP3), and more. Daily quality reports were turned into the Owner, while weekly inspections were performed by our in-house NACE and SSPC coatings inspectors. Even the maintenance of water purification system was critical since pressure washing water was being pumped directly from the reservoir for use on the penstock. Keeler and Long technical representatives were consulted with several times during important aspects of the coating process. On this project the manufacturer, applicator and owner worked as a team to make sure no item was overlooked and the project progressed on or ahead of schedule without lacking any detail of quality.

The schedule in fact, was consistently reviewed by Alpine’s project management staff. The workforce on site ranged from 4 men during mobilization and touchups to more than 18 during times of peak workload. To keep the project moving quickly Alpine used small crews to perform one specific task on the entire Penstock. For example, a dedicated three man crew installed and removed all safety cables. One seven man crew performed all spraying operations, while another seven man crew pressure washed the entire structure. These small groups were able to perfect their techniques over the length of this structure without having to slow down due to a learning curve for a different part of the project. The whole project was scheduled to be substantially complete, not including touchups and demobilization, in 7 weeks. Alpine was fully complete in only 6 weeks, including touchups and demobilization. (three inches of snow arrived one week after completion!)

Environmental Impact was a very important part of the overall scope of this project. Emulsifiers and Degreasers, such as TSP, were not allowed due to potential contamination issues. Alpine paid close attention to pressure washing quality, and consulted the manufacturer, since cleaning products were not allowed. Alpine required the use of ground containment and spill pads around and under all gasoline and diesel engines as well as any other items that contained a potential for a spill. Wind direction and speed was also regularly watched to determine as to whether car covers were sufficient protection from overspray, or if the spraying would need to be cancelled for the day.

Safety, Quality Control, Scheduling, and Environmental controls were implemented so well that Alpine Painting & Sandblasting Contractors was granted the full 10% Bonus for excellent performance. Alpine will be testing several overcoat products for the station’s 320 Ton Crane painting project scheduled for 2009.

Besides the 4 factors in the Bonus/Penalty plan, the repainting of the Penstock was very complex and technical project due to the limited resources required for work to be performed. First, sufficient potable water was not available for use. We utilized a trailer with a 750 gallon water tank to transfer water from nearby to an 1150 gallon stationary tank approximately 4 times per day to sustain pressure washing operations. A three stage filtering system was used to ultimately remove particles down to 50 microns in size.

Lack of available electricity also presented problems since only 60 amps of power was available at one location about 2/3 up the length of the penstock. Extension cords cannot extend over a couple hundred feet so, Alpine supplemented this power with portable and tow behind generators with outdoor sub-panels mounted on them to provide mobile power able to supply the electric pumps and surface preparation tools.

Access to most areas was particularly difficult due to the limited space available to place equipment. Three main areas were available for equipment staging but, in some areas only 3 feet on each side of the penstock were available to walk. Steep slopes and vegetation limited vehicular access to less than half of the Penstock; so long walks were an everyday occurrence.

Finally, since the area around the Penstock is very infrequently traveled, snakes, ticks, bears and other animals presented a new array of hazards not considered on many other projects. Rattlesnake, Copperhead and Black snakes are native to the area. We were fortunate enough not to have any snake or tick bite incidents on the project.

Overall, the project was a success for all the parties involved. Alpine was able to meet our estimated budget and make a profit and the station Owner was returned a Penstock with a new high quality coating system that should last them years of continued operation.

Project Facts: 117,000 SF of surface area

When Long Island American water Corporation targeted its 2.5-million-gallon water tank for maintenance, the owner scheduled the work over the winter and spring months so that the tank could be put back into service by May 1, 2005, says Rich Kern, PE, project engineer for the company. Working in the cold, wet winter months necessitated the use of dehumidification equipment, as well as heating equipment, to keep relative humidity levels and steel temperatures suitable for surface preparation and coating operations, says Sam Scaturro, operations manager for Alpine Painting and Sandblasting Contractors.

Alpine Painting and Sandblasting Contractors was featured on the front page of the New Jersey Star Ledger’s “Jobfinder” section. The article discusses the importance of seasonal jobs in the painting industry along with insightful quotes by Alpine’s Director of Operations and Safety, Sam Scaturro. Even during tough economic times Alpine constantly continues to grow and is always looking to hire new seasonal workers that are qualified to work in the field.

Much of the training for commercial painting is learned on the job by watching seasoned veterans. Additionally, three fourths of the training is about safety procedures in the shop. This training process can last over eight weeks before each individual is cleared for work in the field. All of Alpine’s seasonal employees must also undergo a drug test, background check, and hearing tests before they are hired.

While many seasonal jobs do not offer competitive pay, Alpine’s average seasonal worker is paid between $15-18 an hour. Four of Alpine’s seasonal workers earned over six figures. While Alpine strives to keep seasonal workers employed for as long as possible the harsh New Jersey winter months make it difficult to paint outside for part of the year.

You can apply for a seasonal painting job at Alpine by completing and submitting the online application and then wait to be called for an interview.

Another project was to clean and paint five storage tanks in the tank farm area outside. As done in the past, we called upon Dave Scatturo from Alpine Painting to help us put a plan together.

Two of the tanks were 20,000 gallons which always presents a challenge because of the height. However, Alpine took all necessary safety precautions in order to get the job done.

First, the tanks were cleaned by power washing and spot grinding/sanding. Plastic sheets were put around the base of the tank to catch debris and prevent it from running into our catch basin. The grinders/sanders were also equipped with a Hepa vacuum to reduce the amount of dust generated.

Once the tanks were prepared, three coats of epoxy paint were applied; a primer, an intermediate, and then a final coat of paint. The life span of this epoxy paint is about 8-10 years. The painting of these tanks is necessary maintenance and also helps keep the Tank Farm looking nice.

Thank you to Dave at Alpine Painting for completing this project in a timely and professional manner, as well as Bel-Ray and specifically Warren Cobb for letting us be in the way for a few weeks.

Poisoned Paint. The Danger of Lead Based Paint

The use of lead-based paint has been banned for three decades. Yet more than 38 million homes in this country are estimated still to be contaminated with lead paint, which can cause significant health problems, particularly in children.

Almost one million children under age six suffer from lead poisoning, which can cause permanent brain damage. So how can you tell if your house or building has lead paint? How do you find a contractor who can safely eliminate the health risk? Can you afford it? Before planning your next maintenance project, you should know the answers to questions such as these.

To raise awareness of the health risk, the week of Oct. 19 is designated National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week by the U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Lead paint was used commonly in homes before 1978, when the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission banned its use because of the health hazards.

Homeowners aren’t required to remove lead paint since it poses no immediate risk unless it is flaking or peeling. However, when lead paint is peeling or disturbed during renovations, it should be removed immediately, according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

Lead enters the body mainly though inhalation and ingestion. Signs of lead poisoning may include fatigue, sleep problems, irritability and headaches. Many of the symptoms are commonly misdiagnosed as the flu. Children and pregnant women have the greatest risk of permanent health damage. Lead dust settles on floors and walls where it can get on children’s hands or toys and into their mouths.

	Testing Methods

There are three ways to test for lead in paint, but only one can be done by the homeowner. The other two require the use of professional testing services. The most common testing method is X-ray fluorescence (XRF) in which a handheld device is used to determine the presence and quantity of lead. XRF is the preferred method for residential work because many measurements can be taken in a short period of time with no damage to the surface being tested.

The second method is a paint chip analysis. Paint chips must be sent to a certified testing laboratory and analyzed for total lead content. Results from each of these methods should be compared to the acceptable ranges established by HUD and discussed with a certified industrial hygienist.

Homeowners can test using swabs that change color in the presence of paint containing lead. Lead-testing kits are sold at home improvement stores and on the Internet. While this test isn’t as accurate as the other two methods and can’t provide a quantitative analysis, it is an inexpensive way to determine whether it’s necessary to hire a professional testing service.

Homeowners shouldn’t try to remove lead paint themselves, the Consumer Product Safety Commission warns. It should be removed only by professionals trained to remove hazardous materials. Grinding, sanding or scraping can produce lead dust, which can be suspended in the air for some time. Once it lands on a surface, the area must be cleaned sufficiently or it may become contaminated. Typical contaminated areas include floors, window sills, window wells and the soil just outside the house. Since the dust can be airborne, the lead may contaminate your neighbor’s property or even public property. This can leave you vulnerable to lawsuits, which your insurance may not cover.

	Treatment Choices

Once you determine you have lead-paint contamination, you have three options: lead abatement, encapsulation or repainting.

Abatement is the removal and disposal of all lead paint, with removal to the bare substrate. Typically, the work is done using a chemical stripper and power tools with a HEPA vacuum attachment. The work area should be sealed off with heavy plastic to contain the lead-contaminated waste and dust.

Encapsulation uses a specially approved coating applied to surfaces covered in lead paint. This product meets federal standards and is warranted by the manufacturer to seal the lead paint for at least 20 years. In most states, contractors must choose from state-approved encapsulants.

Repainting in a lead-safe manner is the most common and typically least expensive option. This can only be done before the state or municipality determines the lead paint is dangerous to the occupants. A contractor must protect the workers, the public and the environment from the dangers of the lead paint.

Cost is usually a key factor in deciding on the treatment. Abatement, or removal, is the most expensive treatment. It can cost three times as much as repainting, while encapsulation can cost double the amount. The higher cost is primarily due to the need to contain the area, collect dust, hire licensed contractors and workers with lead-pollution insurance and HEPA vacuum equipment.

Also, in deciding on a treatment, you should consider your liability if the job isn’t done correctly. For example, if your home is next to a playground or a daycare facility, your risk of contaminating a sensitive area is high. The chance of being sued may convince you to remove the hazard once and for all.

Your situation should be discussed with your contractor and a certified industrial hygienist so you can make an informed decision on how to proceed.

	Hiring a Contractor

In choosing a qualified contractor to remove or treat lead paint, price should not be the only consideration. Some states require the use of licensed contractors, supervisors and workers to perform lead abatement and encapsulation. Some states set guidelines for repainting in a lead-safe manner. Contact your local health department for more information.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is mandating stricter training for contractors and their workers beginning in 2010. Until then, look for a contractor who meets federal OSHA standards. Your contractor also should have lead pollution insurance and should name you as additional insured. Many general liability insurance policies exclude pollution from lead.

Make sure your contractor has a lead health and safety plan. This plan will prove to you that your contractor knows the hazards and is responsible in dealing with any problems that arise.

Finally, develop a written work plan to cover the details of the job. This should include methods for lead paint removal, dust suppression, worker protection and waste disposal.

Lead poisoning is more common than you may think. A recent episode on “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” featured a foster family, who learned their children have lead poisoning. Dust from lead-based paint on the home’s exterior had deposited in the soil in their backyard, where the children play. It’s frightening to know that an invisible toxin could be harming you and your family.

	Paterson, NJ

The Painting and Decorating Contractors of America (PDCA), announced that Paterson, New Jersey based Alpine Painting and Sandblasting Contractors, won two national awards, a Gold-level award for Safety in the Workplace and the Picture It Painted award in the Industrial Classification.

Worker safety is a major concern for all employers and is of special interest to members of the PDCA, whose workers are at greater risk for falls and exposure to toxic chemicals used in coatings and surface preparation.

“Alpine Painting has been a leader in on-site protocols for worker safety and jobsite protections,” says Benjamin Scaturro, President of Alpine. “We work with high profile corporations and sensitive industrial facilities that need assurances for every step in the process to be performed properly. Safety, the most important, is just one aspect of the assurances we need to provide.”

The second award presented to Alpine at the Paint and Coatings Expo in Los Angles this winter, featured the processes employed to prepare and paint a 200,000 sq/ft animal and food waste recycling facility in Newark, NJ, in 2007. This prestigious award captured the Industrial classification in the Picture It Painted competition.

Alpine was judged on its ability to creatively and successfully remove surface residue where chemical emulsifiers were used under strict compliance procedures. Throughout the project the facility was able to maintain full operation without delay or incident.

Alpine Painting and Sandblasting Contractors, Inc. has been providing procedure-driven painting and related services to industrial and commercial facility operators in New Jersey, New York and Connecticut for more than 30-years. Check out this award winning company at www.AlpinePainting.com

One of the building and service industry’s largest trade associations, the Painting and Decorating Contractors of America (St. Louis, MO), announced that Paterson, New Jersey based Alpine Painting and Sandblasting Contractors, won the industrial classification of its Picture It Painted Professionally Award.

The 2008 award showcased the challenges to surface preparation and recoating surfaces in an animal and food waste recycling facility. Upon contract award, after a rigorous specification and pre-qualification process, Alpine’s industrial engineering department determined worker and property protection procedures.

Surface cleaning, preparation, priming and painting of this specialized facility included storage tanks, buildings, piping and supports, catwalks and fire suppression systems throughout a vast 200,000 sq/ft operation. Surface cleaning required the use of a 36,000 psi pressure washing unit, 12 times more powerful than conventional equipment and chemical emulsifiers applied under strict compliance procedures.

The facility was able to maintain full operation without delay or incident throughout the entire project. The award recognized only 2 contractors in the industrial classification from the more than 60,000 industrial facilities believed to be repainted in the US each year.
